My disease

There are many disease that I would like to cure and learn about, but I am choosing to do syringomyelia. This disease is important to me, because my grandpa had it. He had problems walking, eating, and just moving and was in a wheelchair for half his life. It is a very deadly disease and I wish it didn't exist.

Here are some facts about it:

  • Syringomylia is a disease in the spinal chord in which longitudinal cavities form in the spinal cord.
  • This disease may result in pain, paralysis, weakness and stiffness in the back, shoulders, and extremities. Syringomyelia may also cause a loss of the ability to feel extremes of hot or cold, especially in the hands.
  • The cause of syringomyelia is still unknown, but scientists think it has to do with the spinal cord forming a fluid-filled cyst.
  • Some symptoms include: lost of reflexes in shoulders, neck or arms, muscle weakness or pain, facial pain or numbness, and many more.
  • Syringomyelia is usually not treatable, but you can get surgery. Most doctors recommend not treating the condition if you are older in age or the symptoms are not getting worse.
Support people with this disease by helping them. My grandpa had to have a caregiver so she could feed him and get him to bed. Basically people with this disease need assistance with everything they do. If I could cure one disease it would be syringomylia, so my grandpa and other people wouldn't have to of lived almost their whole lives wheelchair bound.
